Mark's Story

Bulletin 2004-16

Articles

"As a young child I grew up with a father who was often drunk and aggressive. At the age when most kids need their father the most, in their teenage years, my dad drank some acid and suicided.

Without a dad and with emotions of both betrayal and anger, yet grief for what had happened, I began to be led astray by wrong friends. From the age of 14 to 29 I was in and out of boys homes and Jail. Four years ago after coming out of jail I was about to take my life.

Whilst passing Flinders Street Station (Melbourne) I heard some worship music and preaching and I gave my life to the Lord. I have now been a regular each Friday night since that night and have grown in my walk with the Lord.

Two years ago my Step dad died at an early age of a Heart attack. I again felt a sense of rejection and abandonment with his death. Having never really dealt with the rejection and self hatred that I still had repressed deep down, on a number of times I cut myself to gain attention and to hurt myself.

On another occasion I set fire to myself and miraculously I was helped by neighbours and survived. The doctors still can't believe how I survived.

After much love and prayer I have now become aware of my true position in Christ, loved, forgiven and that I have a purpose and destiny in life. I am now doing landscape gardening for a job."

Mark came to a new life in Christ through the work of 'Church of Hope", a marketplace ministry on the streets of Melbourne. Conrad Fenton, founder of Church of Hope, comments: "For the last two years Mark has been an inspiration to our ministry team and to his mum. Mark is a man who is a living testimony that there is a God who loves, saves heals, protects and perseveres with us and who desires us to have abundant life in Him.
