The Business of the Church

Bulletin 2005-07

The Business of the church is marketplace ministry.

How do we draw this conclusion? The church is a community of believers with three main reasons for their existence:
bulletworship
bulletdiscipleship
bulletmission.

Our objective is to hold these purposes in balance, like the legs of a three legged stool.

The mission of the church is to bring people to Christ, help them grow in discipleship and then send them out to bring the Kingdom of God into their personal sphere of influence:

Your Kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven (Matt 6:9).

This then is the business of the church... building the Kingdom of God in the nine primary spheres of society: Business; Creative Arts; Education; Government; Health; Justice; Media; Religion and Sport.

How then can you contribute to bringing the Kingdom of God into your daily business?

Here is a response from Don Flow, President of the Flow Automotive Companies who operate a range of American and European car dealerships in the United States:

"How is my service to Christ infused with the power of the Holy Spirit so that my life truly reflects the Kingdom of God?

The Christian tradition points to prayer as the answer to this question. But for those in the marketplace; praying about or for our work life feels awkward. For what exactly do I pray? More profit? A budget request approval? Guidance concerning difficult employees? A promotion?

The following format has been extremely helpful for me in integrating prayer into my work life. Because my personal vision and the corporate vision closely overlap, I make this a central feature of my prayer life. I pray that customers and employees might experience the aroma of Christ as we serve them, and that our service will be infused with the power of the Holy Spirit. I pray that we might have the discipline to look to other's needs before we look to our own. I pray for faithfulness to our mission as it relates to fulfilling our call to service. And I pray for forgiveness when we have failed to live faithfully to our calling.

Finally, I try to pray specifically for the organization in a structured manner. In the personal dimension, I pray for individual employees, their lives, their personal and professional struggles, and for them to come to Christ. At the relational dimension, I pray for us as a community where truth and grace might reign. I confess regularly my own shortcomings in this area. I also pray regularly for relationships, for reconciliations, and for the development of trust. Regarding the technological or systems dimension, I pray for wisdom concerning how to integrate it into the human community, how to let it assist us in fulfilling our vision of service. In the economic dimension, I pray for the profits we need to sustain our commitment to our mission, vision, and core values."
