The Greatest Transaction Ever Made

Bulletin 2007-08

Gabriel and Mary

While our normal understanding of a transaction is associated with the conduct of business, it can also entail an exchange or interaction between people.

Can you therefore begin to imagine the shock of a young lady endowed with the virtues of humility, purity and devotion... meeting the angel Gabriel out of nowhere to receive the greatest message ever conveyed from God to man. To an engaged virgin this was a shocking yet glorious prophetic message... that she was to become pregnant with the son of God out of wedlock:

"You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, and he will reign over the house of Jacob forever; his kingdom will never end."

Following this great announcement the emissary of the message had one qualifying statement and the recipient had just one answer. These two principles are the basis of fulfilling our life's purposes.

The initiative for great purposes comes from God. In Mary's case there was no committee or board to evaluate the credentials of the prophecy - yet the proof would very soon be evident in her body! The shocked fiancé also had to be told explicitly by an angel in a dream not to reject his pregnant fiancé, but to marry her and to abstain from sex until after the child was born.

What great joy, that we can not only participate in the celebration of this incredible event... but also come to know the offspring of Mary's womb as our best friend!

So what was the one qualifying statement and the one response that were the keys to unlocking the birth of Jesus?...

  • the angel Gabriel's statement: "For nothing is impossible with God", and

  • Mary's reply: "I am the Lord's servant... may it be to me as you have said."
    (Luke 1:37-38 NIV).

So let our faith also be uplifted by this truth: "nothing is impossible with God", and may we also be uplifted in spirit as we respond to God's call as Mary did: "may it be to me as you have said".

This message of encouragement is also intended as a special word of thanks to every person who has accepted the challenge to be an influencer for the Kingdom of God in the course of their daily occupation. For by intentionally participating in this mission we are connecting with the very purpose Jesus was born... check out Col 1:18-20.

Have a safe and joyful Christmas and a purposeful New Year pregnant with Kingdom transactions!
