Change the Conversation this Christmas

Bulletin Dec 2010

Baby in the hands of love Why will this baby move from the hands of love to the altar of sacrifice? And what is the significance of the horns of the altar today?

Praise be to the Lord, the God of Israel,
because he has come to his people and redeemed them.
He has raised up a horn of salvation for us
in the house of his servant David

(Luke 1:68-69)

O babe of Bethlehem we celebrate your birth two thousand years ago. You arrived with a look of penetrating destiny. You entered a plan beyond your infant comprehension. Here you are, held in the hands of love but destined for the altar of sacrifice. You enter willingly into this purpose: to make God known, to heal, to win the battle over the world, the flesh and the devil, to die and yet to live again! Your life was preordained that we may find our destiny in your hands of love. Oh Christmas dawn what splendour and what pain, what perplexing joy - but babe you will not deviate from the plan prepared for you by father God.

The stone the builders rejected
has become the cornerstone;

the Lord has done this,
and it is marvellous in our eyes.

The Lord has done it this very day;
let us rejoice today and be glad.

Lord, save us!
Lord, grant us success!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.

From the house of the Lord we bless you. The Lord is God, and he has made his light shine on us.

With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar.

Psalm 118:22-27

Some cornerstone: some 33.2% of the world's population, some 2.3 billion people call him Lord of lords and King of kings today!

Let's celebrate what the Lord has done!

But this celebration comes at such a cost. From the hands of love to betrayal and the altar. Life given on our behalf to fulfill the demands of justice: his death in our place that we may live!

The altar is the place of sacrifice. The horns are the place of mercy. Jesus death. Our life.

Judgment without mercy will be shown to anyone who has not been merciful. Mercy triumphs over judgment (James 2:13).

So with Christmas trees in our homes let us also join in the festal procession up to the horns of the alter where life has been given for life. Mercy.

Thank you Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Christian blessings to you, your family and friends this Christmas,

Peter
