| Introducing Someone to Christ | |
|
By John Botha I would like to share with you on here a way of witnessing that I have learnt from a preacher named Ray Comfort and put into practise over the last year. Personal evangelism can be tough, but I’ve found by sticking to this I’ve been able to share my faith with family, friends, workmates and strangers to good effect. Have you ever had trouble bring up the things of God with a colleague? Struggled to share your faith? Well, I’m here to help. Firstly, I relate to the person in a friendly, courteous manner. A simple, “how are you?” or “what are you up to tonight?” can break the ice. I also use tracts called “icebreakers” which are a help to me. Secondly, I swing things to the spiritual realm; this is the bit that takes courage. I ask them, “Do you have a Christian background?” or “What do you think happens after you die?” This shows the person I care about them as individuals and am not merely trying to preach to them. It also gives them an opportunity to tell me what they believe which helps educate me on where they are coming from. Usually, the person says in reference to the after-life that you go to heaven if you are a good person. Thirdly, I ask them a question, “Do you think you are a good person?” or “Are you good enough to go to heaven?” 99% say, “Yes, I’m a good person” Here is where I take the conversation from there. For illustration purposes I’ll call the person I’m speaking with, Tony: John – “Can I ask you a few questions to see if that’s true?” Tony – “Sure” John – “Ok Tony, first question, have you ever told a lie?” Tony – “Of course I have, everyone has”. John – “Well, what does that make you?” Tony – “Human (this is the number one answer!). John – “I can see your human, but specifically? What would you call me if I lied to you?” Tony – “Ok, a liar.” John – “Have you ever stolen anything?” Tony – “Yes, when I was younger” John – “So that makes you a thief. Tony, Jesus said, “If you look upon a woman to lust after her you have committed adultery in your heart. Have you ever looked with lust?” Tony – “Of course I have, who hasn’t?” John – “Ok Tony, by your own admission, you’re a lying thief and a adulterer at heart, and we have only looked at 3 of the Ten Commandments! If God judges you by this standard when you die, would you be innocent or guilty?” Tony – “I guess I’d be guilty”. John – “So would you go to heaven or hell?” Tony – “I guess I’d go to hell. John – “Would that concern you?” Tony – “Yes it would.” (If he says no, reason with him how about what hell is, a place of eternal torment and suffering.) John – “Do you know what God has done for you so you wouldn’t have to go to hell?” Tony – “Not really” John – “God himself became a man in the person of Jesus Christ. Jesus came to earth, lived a perfect life, and then died on a cross to take the punishment for you sins. God so loved the world that he gave his only Son to die in your place. Then Jesus rose from the dead and now offers eternal life. What you now need to do is turn from your old ways, confess your sins, and put your trust in Jesus Christ to save you. Then read the Bible, and obey what it says. God will forgive your sins and grant you eternal life because of what Jesus has done for you. Is that something you can give some though to?” Tony – “Sure.” John – “You have a bible at home? Please read the gospel of John and obey what it says. There is nothing more important than where you spend eternity.” I then leave them in the capable hands of an awesome God. Jesus promised the Holy Spirit would come to convict the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. This is why I mention sin, righteousness and judgment! I’d encourage you all to give this a go. In all the methods I’ve tried, this is most effective in enabling me to go through a clear gospel presentation with practically anyone. The great thing about it as well is that no matter whom you talk with, you can control the conversation. You can share this same way with anyone. Please shoot me an email if you want any help on your witnessing efforts. I’m here to serve the body of Christ and can provide you with materials, tracts, team to go out with so you can learn.
